Religion and AIDS
Dec 31, 1998

How do religious organizations feel about required AIDS testing? Do religious groups discriminate against individuals with AIDS?

Response from Ms. Breuer

Religious organizations are exempt from the provisions of the ADA, so they may legally discriminate against a person with HIV or AIDS. I'm not sure what the point would be; why would a religious organization want to set a lower standard than the state? As to mandatory AIDS testing (there's really no such thing; it would be mandatory HIV testing) or how religious groups feel, they are all unique. I would suggest following up with the governing body of whatever religious group you have in mind.
