| Life insurance screening Dec 18, 2001 If someone were applying for a life insurance policy of >150,00, would an HIV test be required? What are the standard testing methods of life insurance companies (or the labs that they use for screening) in regards to type of test, generation of test, etc.? Thank you! |

Response from Ms. Breuer
Laws regarding what kinds of tests are legal in the life, medical and disability insurance fields are all written by the insurance companies. In short, no matter how much insurance you're applying for, they have the right to test for HIV. The best way to obtain any kind of insurance if you're HIV positive is to sign up for a group policy at your place of work. Group policies generally do not require blood tests. If you apply as an individual, it's likely that a nurse or phlebotomist will be sent to your home and will indeed draw blood for an HIV test, and if you refuse, you don't get insured. | |||
