HIV survival in freezer Aug 2, 2001 Hi, this is not directly linked to work place issues, but suppose someone scratched themselves on a shelf in a freezer (someone HIV positive), would any remaining HiV stay infectious if small traces of blood remained on that shelf? Thanks for your help! |

 Heat destroys HIV. Freezing doesn't. Beyond those simple facts, this scenario describes a minute amount of blood on a metal freezer shelf. Ever see what happens to unwrapped food in a freezer? It loses all its moisture pretty fast. Freezing doesn't destroy HIV, but air dries up the blood trace and basically turns it to powder. End of problem. But do, please, glove up and clean the freezer. Human blood and food are a poor mix. | ||||||||
