| Health insurance at work -pricing us out Feb 14, 2000 Our agency's group plan is experiencing huge increases in premiums. 3 persons in the group. 2 are HIV positive. Our insurance agent says the increases are due to our HIV+ status in an attempt to price our group out of existence. Is this legal? Are there any protections? What advice do you have? I live and work in South Carolina. The insurance carrier is Blue Cross/Blue Shield. |

Response from Ms. Franzoi
With a small group plan, if the claims experience for a year is high because one or more individuals covered under the plan have high claims, the insurer will raise the premium for the following contract year. I suggest your employer look for a small group plan that is community-rated rather than one that is individually. HMO's are often community-rated. Lynn Franzoi | |||
