Long Term HEatlh Insurance
Dec 26, 2013

I am 50 and have been Poz for 10 years. My non HIV siblings are all buying long term care insurance policies. Can Hiv Poz people buy these? Do the agents who sell them need to know my status? Are the agents under any duty to keep my HIV status private ?

Response from Mr. Chambers

Long Term Care (LTC) Insurance is a specialized type of health insurance which provides custodial care either at home or in a nursing facility. Custodial care, as opposed to acute or curative care, is not normally covered in regular health insurance policies.

LTC, like individual disability and most life insurance policies require medical underwriting and are not affected by Obamacare, the new health insurance law.

While they don't always require a physical exam, coverage does depend on answering a series of health questions that will always include asking about your HIV status and what medications you are on.

Currently, they do not accept HIV+ persons for coverage.

Keep in mind that lying (or misrepresenting) information on the application gives the insurance company an opportunity to walk away from the coverage, usually just when you need it most.

Sorry, Jacques
