|Sun poisoning or other sickness that can be worsened by HIV...FMLA
May 16, 2013
I had sun poisoning and there was no way I'd be able to go to work until the blisters on my shoulder neck and back were gone and skin was at least healing. I called out and used FMLA because I know of I didn't take care of my skin I could have infections. Now my manager is questioning how FMLA and sun poisoning go hand in hand? I called out for 3 days straight. This was the only way I knew to do it without getting either fired, or having further complications with my body. Did I do something wrong? Or am I right? Thank you, Dr.

Under FMLA, your employer has the right to request a statement from your doctor that your absence is due to a "serious medical condition." The doctor will hopefully be able to discuss how the severe sunburn is serious without necessarily mentioning HIV.The use of the term "sun poisoning" should help.
Ask your doctor for such a statement.
Good luck. Jacues
