|pre-employment physical for flight attendant HIV+
Jan 16, 2012
During the physical examination, the doctor makes you tell all meds your currently taking. When disclosing the HIV meds, will that make me fail my physical?
Response from Mr. Chambers
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a pre-employment physical exam cannot be required until you have been formally offered a position. Once offered, they cannot retract it unless the exam shows you are physically or mentally unable to perform the job duties. Simply being HIV+ does not prevent you from being a flight attendant. I know of several people who have gone through the same thing, they revealed their status to the doctor, and were still employed.
I recommend when you have the exam that you be honest and tell the doctor about your condition. I also don't think it hurts to express your concerns to the doctor and ask him or her whether the employer gets the whole exam or just whether or not you can do the job.
Good luck and happy flying.
