indeterminate wb and obtaining insurance coverage
Apr 2, 2009

Hello and thanks for the great info on your website. I recently received an hiv test as part of a physical exam and my western blot came back as indeterminate. I am super low to non-existent risk and am pretty confident that I am negative. After reading excerpts from this site I have learned more about indeterminates so I feel pretty good about things from that side. However, I am concerned about insurance. My insurance ends in a few weeks and I will be going onto my wife's insurance plan but I will start on the plan before I am retested. Will my indeterminate status on the HIV test prevent me from being added to her insurance plan or cause any problems in that regard? I think the plan is Premera. Thanks so much for your time!

Response from Ms. Franzoi

I am assuming that your wife has her coverage through an employer-sponsored group health plan. If that is the case, she can add you once you lose coverage. Even if her plan has a pre-existing condition clause in it, the plan would have to recognize your period of prior coverage (as long as you don't have a 63 day break in coverage) towards any pre-existing limitation and the period cannot be longer than 12 months. So if you have 12 months of coverage under your current employer's plan and will be losing it, she should be able to add you with no problem and no pre-existing condition limitation.
