Generic Drugs
Apr 2, 2009

I was shocked to find out that my insurance has now mandated a 100% co-payment for brand name drugs. This change results in my out of pocket expenses equalling over $22,000.00 per year. I am currently taking Sustiva, Combivir, and Viread, and they are working perfectly. Are these drugs available in a generic? There is no way I can afford to pay for the brand name medication. Have you had many questions similar to mine regarding the new changes with insurance companies. What do they expect us to do. I would be better off with no insurance. AL

Response from Ms. Franzoi

I am not sure if your plan is saying that it covers generic drugs only or possibly that it requires 100% for brand drugs when a generic is available. The latter is what I am used to seeing. I suggest you get some detailed information from the plan. I do not know what might be available in generic form. However, your pharmacist should be able to advise you.
