Loss of Cobra
Feb 15, 2008

I took a job nearly a year ago because it was a great opportunity, I started Cobra just to get me through the time to figure out what my options were. I unfortunately lapsed one payment and now have no insurance. Do I have any options or am I out of options for insurance?

Response from Ms. Franzoi

With respect to COBRA, failure to pay premium is cause for termination of coverage and there is no way to reinstate that coverage. If you are employed with by a company that offers health care coverage, you would be eligible to enroll in your company's plan at open enrollment time. (This varies by plan and is based on the plan year. Open enrollment is usually in Novemeber for a January 1 effective date for a calendar year plan.) Another option would be to apply for an individual policy with a local insurance comapny. However, you will have to answer a medical questionnaire and the insurance company will then make a determination of whether or not to extend coverage to you.
