FOOD HANDLER & HIV
Jan 15, 2008

CAN HIV POSS. INDIVIDUALS WORK IN FOOD SERVICE AND IF SO, WHAT PERCAUTIONS, SHOULD YOU TAKE AS AN EMPLOYER

Response from Ms. Breuer

Yes, a person with HIV can be a food handler. The precautions concern human blood. Post clear rules about how anyone/everyone should act when they get cut, and provide training so that everyone knows how to respond to human blood. Blood on food is not the concern here. Blood left on knives or work surfaces is. HIV would be hard to transmit through shared use of a contaminated knife, but hepatitis B would be easier to transmit.
