|For HIPPA Policy, Must I First Be Denied Regular Policy?
Dec 14, 2006
I'm an HIV+ former corp. exec. now on COBRA and pursuing self-employment. Must I first be denied a regular individual policy by a carrier, such as Blue Cross, to apply for a HIPPA policy? Or, since I know I would certainly be denied a regular individual policy, may I apply within the 63 days after COBRA ends for a HIPPA policy? If so, what is the process, and are there any pitfalls should I avoid? You're fabulous, love your answers and thank you so much for your help!

You don't have to wait for a denial in order to apply. I would recommend applying before your COBRA runs out so you don't have a lapse in coverage. You could either go directly to an insurance carrier, like Blue Cross or Blue Shield, and apply on-line or work through an insurance broker in your area.
