| HIV+ Health Insurance Sep 15, 2006 Recently relocated from CA to FL., I am self employed, healthy and HIV+.I do not require meds. I have coverage in California which needs to be changed to Florida. The Ins. Co. in CA is unaware of my HIV status (I was lucky enough to receive early intervention treatment from the OPTIONS Project in SF which was very effective). Can I transfer a policy from CA to FL without having an HIV test ? I'm assuming that my rates would sky rocket whether I had an HIV test or not. Can they refuse to insure me at the same company in another State if I declare my HIV status or if I allow them to test me ? I am not poor enough to qualify for Ryan White or other agencies and not rich enough to pay huge premiums. Can you help me please ? |

Response from Ms. Franzoi
Usually an insurance company requires an applicant to apply for coverage in the new state and complete a medical questionnaire, even if it is the same insurance company. Whether or not you are approved for coverage is up to the insurance company's underwritiers. You might want to inquire of your current insurance policy contact to see if you could "transfer" the coverage from CA to FL. With an HIV+ diagnosis, it could be difficult to purchase an individual policy. However, if you were to get a job with a company that offered a group health plan, you could easily get that coverage by applying during the initial enrollment period. | |||
