How to keep my insurance ?
Sep 15, 2006

How are you and thank you for your helpfull information!I have insurance though my job right now but I am thinking to change my job. I am a hairdreeser and the place I am working is kinda small group.Anyway If I dicide to leave this place it is NOT going to be amicable and my employee will drop me from this plan right away and will not be able to ask about COBRA . I am thinking to swich to individual plan from same insurance company before it is occer. I contact this company and they offer individual plan.Or is it possible to ask my boyfriend to put me in his plan during open enrollment ?

Response from Ms. Franzoi

If your current employer has at least 20 employees, he has to offer you COBRA, regardless of how he feels about you leaving. You could check into an individual plan but such plans are often more expensive than group plans and there is no guarantee of coverage. You have to answer medical questions on an application and the insurance company has to approve you for coverage. If your partner is covered under a plan that offers domestic partmner coverage, he could cover you once you lose coverage under your plan or during open enrollment. He should look at his plan summary to determine when he could add you.
