supplemental insurand for medicare recipient
Mar 10, 2006

I was diagnosed in 1996. At that time I was self-employed and maintained 2 insurance policies - one for basic medical insurance and a catastrophic plan with a $25,000 deductible. I now have medicare and ADAP and find it difficult to cover the premiums (about $3800 per year) for these supplemental plans. Do you think it is necessary to continue these or will Medicare and ADAP cover most expenses. I am currently in great health and neither my doctor nor I anticipate any major health problems.

Thank you in advance for all your advice and assistance.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

As long as you have Medicare, I see no reason to continue the other plans. If you were to lose your Medicare coverage, you would qualify for a HIPAA policy as long as you did not have a break in coverage greater than 63 days.
