|Concerned about finding insurance when self employed
May 3, 2005
I am HIV+ for 3 1/2 years, have a PPO insurance plan through my current employer. I am thinking about becoming self-employed eventually (within the next yearor so)and want to purchase my own health insurance. Off the record,I have been advised to lie about my health status in order to find insurance. I would not use this new insurance plan for quite some time as I planned to continue being insured through my current company as long as I am employed. If I don't want to lie, what are my options to cotinuing to be insured? I assume I have a COBRA option with my current insurance but what happens after that? Who will insure me?
Response from Ms. Franzoi
I would not recommend lying on an application for medical coverage. If discovered, it could invalidate your coverage retroactive to its effective date among other negative consequences. If you leave your current job, you would be eligible for COBRA and after COBRA, you could get a HIPAA policy.
Supervisor disclosed my hiv status to co-workers.
