working in a shop setting
Dec 29, 2004

Hello, What time lapse is required exactly (few seconds, few minutes) between when an individual cuts himself on a sharp engine part and then a second individual come into contact with that same thing, even cutting himself on the same sharp engine part?

Response from Ms. Breuer

Whew! I'm more interested in how long it's been since everyone in the shop had safety training on that machine!

To answer your question, HIV in blood remains viable for a very short time. The length depends on the amount of blood, how quickly it's exposed to air and some other factors that make a precise answer impossible. What safety gloves are available?

HIV is not your greatest concern in this scenario. Hepatitis b is much more dangerous in this way. If it happens, the second person has had a workplace exposure to human blood and requires medical follow-up.
