I don't know what to do!
Aug 17, 2004

I've decided to go back to work part-time (15hrs. a week),after 3 years unemployed. As any other person in my shoes, I have some concerns about Medicaid in the state of NY. Recently I've looked through the internet but haven't found much of any information on how to manage my situation. What do you think I should expect once I go back on payroll? How about my prescriptions coverage? I'm so scared to make this move but really feel like giving it a try. Please help!

Response from Ms. Breuer

Congratulations! I hope your return to the world of work brings you all kinds of rewards. Some studies suggest that people who work with HIV maintain adherence better and have a higher quality of life.

The Internet is not a great place to do random searches for something that has such a huge potential impact on your life. You're in a specific situation as a New York resident on Medicaid. That means you need a qualified human being who specializes in this situation as your advisor. Fortunately, your state is rich in AIDS service organizations. Contact the Gay Men's Health Crisis in Manhattan or the AIDS office at the Westchester County Dept of Health and ask about speaking to a benefits counselor there or a referral to a qualified benefits counselor in your area. Those just happen to be two I know a fair amount about, but there are many more resources. If I were you, I'd consult with two benefits counselors and especially investigate any differences in their interpretation of NY law regarding Medicaid. You have a healthy fear! Let's turn it into action and get you among the happily employed.
