Disability Benefits & Working
Aug 6, 2004

I am presently collecting disability in New York State, as well as receiving Medicare Part A/B & Medicaid. I am feeling very healthy now (viral load undetectable & T-cells approx. 380.) My question is: Can I return to work, but still keep Medicare and Medicaid benefits? Or would I have to purchase private insurance to pay for medical care and prescriptions? I fear that I will not be able to afford medications. Thank you for your time.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

I do not know how Medicaid would work. However, as long as you continue to qualify for Social Security disability benefits (Social Security disability benefits can continue throughout a nine-month trial work period plus an additional three-month grace period), your Medicare benefits would remain in place. In addition, Medicare benefits can continue for at least 93 months after completion of the trial work period.
