New job: Does my private insurance count as creditable coverage?
Jun 25, 2004
I'm back in the job market after a few years off. After leaving my last job, I let my COBRA lapse (not knowing I was HIV positive), but two years ago, purchased an individual policy from a major private insurer. Was tested a year ago and am now on meds. My question: will my private insurance count as "creditable coverage" which would allow me to switch to a new employer's health plan that would cover my pre-existing condition?
Response from Ms. Franzoi
Yes. "Creditable Coverage" includes group health plans, health insurance coverage provided through insurance under any hospital or medical service policy, health insurance carrier or HMO, Medicare, Medicaid and certain other types of health coverages, including public health plans and the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program.
