does anti-bacterial soap pose threat to HIV+
Jun 14, 2004

Hi we are an HIV/AIDS + Hep.C Resource Organization and as such have many clients who are HIV positive, etc. My question is whether the use of anti-bacterial soaps in our organization's bathrooms will create stronger bacteria. I heard this is the case with anti-bacterial soaps, which create stronger bacteria; and, I wonder if this poses any potential health problems for our clients. Thank you for considering my question.

Response from Ms. Breuer

What a thoughtful question. Yes, all of us are helping to force bacteria to mutate by using antibacterial soap. Since ordinary, non-antibacterial soap does the work of soap just fine, using it in your bathrooms would be smarter--as it would for all of us. Now: good luck finding a non-antibacterial liquid soap!
