New to all of this
Dec 4, 2003

I have just been identified as HIV+. I am an elementary teacher and do not want to lose my job. My insurance company will of course know of my status. Will this be disclosed to my employer? Will i lose coverage for being positive?

Response from Ms. Breuer

How are your insurance claims handled? Do you submit them directly to the insurer? What kinds of reports go to your employer? They should be reports about usage of the insurance plan, without any names attached. I suggest calling your insurer and asking what they are doing to protect your confidentiality. Sometimes calls like this can provoke better protections among well-meaning but too-casual service providers.

Firing someone based on HIV status is illegal under the Americans with Disabilities Act. So is cancelling one person's coverage in a group plan.
