|Estimating annual cost for treatment?
Jul 22, 2003
If one is considering paying out of pocket costs for testing, dr visits, and monthly HIV meds, what range would you estimate the cost of care to be for maintenance of HIV+? e.g. 15K-20K? (Assuming no significant opportunistic infections or hospital stays req'd; CD4 count > 300 with low/avg viral load). Would like to know approximate cost of annual treatment if avoid going thru insurance co where one works. Thanks

Your estimate of about $15,000 - $25,000 seems about right. An alternative may be to try and join a clinical research study.
Many of these compare fully approved HIV medications compared to see which are best (sort of like Coke versus Pepsi), provide these drugs and lab tests for free, and never require insurance company notification.
If you are in the US or Western Europe, see if any such studies are available before you pay out of pocket needlessly. DW
