Can HIV+ Woman get health insurance?
Jul 10, 2003

Our 21-year old daughter was diagnosed HIV+ in Nov 02. I feel so terrible because she was tested at our Drs.' office and it was not anonymous so our insurance company knows about the diagnosis. She will be on our insurance until she turns 22, but after that will she ever be able to get health insurance?

Response from Ms. Breuer

Until this country moves away from employer-provided health insurance, she will have one way to get health insurance, which she absolutely needs: work for a company where she has access to a group health insurance plan. When a new employee joins a group health insurance plan, usually the only requirement is filling out a health questionnaire. If there are specific questions about HIV or AIDS, or digging for a diagnosis on the form, she should read the questions and answers on this forum that deal with that question. There are perfectly legal, honest ways to deal with that.
