From COBRA to what ?
Sep 3, 2002

Do you know any resources for insurance services or plans being HIV +? Recently I was laid off, I have taken cobra coverage. I would like to privately obtain insurance to avoid any future lapse in coverage. I have not found many resources or answers about this subject. If I lapse coverage what happens? How would a future insurance policy determine a pre-existing condition? Does this vary by state? Sorry for all the questions any assistance at all would be appreciated...

Response from Ms. Franzoi

Once COBRA coverage ends, if the plan you were covered under was an insured plan, you could be eligible for a conversion policy. (Contact the plan administrator to find out if conversion is available.) Another option would be to contact an insurance broker for a HIPAA policy. HIPAA coverage would only be available if you don't have a lapse in coverage or if you do that it was less than 63 days. A HIPAA policy would recognize your prior period of coverage towards any pre-existing condition exclusion period.
