what are the requirements of ssi before awarding disability status to an hiv patient

Response from Ms. Franzoi

Social Security disability begins after a waiting period of five full calendar months. To qualify for disablity benefits, you must have been disabled throughout this entire period. You must be so severely impaired, physically or mentally, that you cannot perform any substantial gainful work and the impairment must be expected to last at least 12 months. You must also have a minimum number of credits for Social Security coverage - 40 credits which is 10 years of Social Security covered employment. You should discuss this with your doctor. He should be able to advise you whether or not your level of disability will qualify you for Social Security disability benefits. Also, it is commopn to have Social Security deny benefits on the first application. Many people apply two or more times before they are granted coverage.
