Disability insurance: Too late?
Nov 20, 2000

Is it possible to sign up for disability insurance after a HIV diagnosis? I had the option to sign up 8 months ago when I started my job, but being 24, I didn't really see any point in it. Now I have been diagnosed with HIV (which I contracted AFTER I started working) I don't know anything about insurance or disability at all. I haven't met the 10 year requirement by SS to recieve benefits. I'm scared that I am going to get sick and not have any way of paying for it if I have to leave my job for health reasons. Any advice on what to do in this situation? Thanks.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

It is too late to sign up now because the insurance company will probably require you to provide evidence of good health before allowing you to be covered. However, if your company offers an open enrrollment for disability, you should be able to sign up without providing medical evidence. Contact your Benefits Department to find out if they will be offering an open enrollment opportunity for disability insurance.
