health care workers and aids testing
Aug 24, 1998

do heathl care workers get tested fo aids

Response from Ms. Breuer

Whether a health care worker gets tested for HIV is up to the medical advisory board of the hospital where the person practices, if their work location is a hospital. To my knowledge, the only health care workers whose practices may be restricted or prevented if they have HIV are surgeons. There are no cases of HIV transmission in this country from a health care worker to a patient. There are 54 cases of HIV or AIDS from a patient to a health care worker, with 132 cases pending investigation. The health care provider encounters far greater risk than the patient.
