|Keeping up the payments on individual health insurance
Jul 23, 1997
Let's say I convert my group plan to an individual plan when I leave my job. I'm worried what would happen if for some reason I can't keep up the payments. Is there anywhere I can get help for this in California.
Response from Ms. Franzoi
The California Department of Health services will pay the private health insurance premiums for certain individuals who are losing employment and have a high cost medical condition. This is provided through the Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) plan. To obtain more information on this program, call 1-800-952-5294.
In addition, persons unable to work because of disability due to HIV/AIDS and who are losing private health care coverage might qualify for the Health Insurance Continuation Program (CARE/HIPP) for a period of up to 12 months. For information on CARE/HIPP, CALL 1-800-367-2437 (No. California) or 1-800-922-2437 (So. California).
