Response to long term disability question
Sep 4, 2009
This is not a question, but rather a remark to an inquiry someone had asked about his/her long term disability benefits being cancelled by Cigna.
After receiving long term disability benefits from Cigna for nearly 15 years, I received a letter from them stating after review of my records, they found I was no longer considered disabled. I was dumbfounded, as I had been deemed disabled in 1994, and had been receiving social security along with Medicare benefits since that time. I contacted an attorney who advise me to include in my appeal, letters from friends and family about how they have seen my health deteriorate over the years. I have had, and still do have many health issues related to Hiv/Aids. In my appeal, I included EVERY detail of my health issues and how they affect my well being.
With the economy going in a downward spiral, it is my belief insurance companies, such as Cigna are looking for loopholes in records to get out of paying long term benefits. Obviously, there has been no cure for Hiv/Aids, and I do not understand how it is they can reverse someone's benefits after being granted.
To make a long, drawn out story short, I am happy to say, my appeal was successful. Not only were my benefits paid retroactively, but they ended up offering me a lump sum settlement based on my mortality. Cigna did not have video tapes of me, however, even if they did, they cannot begin to phathom the mental distress of a person living with this disesase.
Best of luck with your appeal.
