Small Group Policy
May 2, 2008

I am currently considering a new position with a small startup company, and I would be the first of only about 5-6 people in the US with health insurance benefits. I have been on Meds for 3 years, and I'm worried about whether or not there will be a waiting period, or pre-existing condition clause. I am currently covered by very good insurance, and I'm concerned that even if I don't have the problems with getting coverage from the start, that somehow they will know how much I cost the plan due to my 3k a month medication cost. Would they have visibility to this? I am in California if that helps answer. Thanks!

Response from Ms. Franzoi

This is difficult to answer without knowing the nature of the coverage offered at this start-up company. Is it individual policies or a small group plan? If it is individual contracts, the coverage would be subject to underwriting and you might or might not qualify. If it is a small group plan, it will probably be community rated. However, if your company's costs are high, there is the possibility of increased premiums. Without more details on the nature of the coverage and the insuraqnce policy, I cannot fully respond to your question.
