Cancellation?
Apr 25, 2008

I am a 23 yr old male who was recently diagnosed with HIV. I am about to start treatment, and I have a private insurance policy through Aetna. I started this policy a few years ago, long before I had ever been tested for HIV.

My father seems to think that my insurance company can cancel my policy because I am now a "high-risk policyholder". I believe this is not only ethically wrong, but also illegal. Is it possible for an insurance company to cancel your policy because of the high cost of claims for HIV meds?

Also, am I able to increase my coverage in order to reduce my out of pocket cost for prescription drugs, even though I know that I will require lifelong care?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

The insurance company cannot cancel your coverage because they determine that you are a "high-risk policyholder." However, you must be careful not to miss a premiuum payment which would give them a reason to cancel. With respect to changing plans in order to have better Rx coverage, you would have to check with Aetna on what is available and whether or not you qualify.
