HIV/Insurance
Apr 24, 2008

At the age of 17 I was diagnosed with HIV. I had no insurance and could not afford it at the age of 17. Now that I am 24 I have had insurance for the past three years with the same company. But now I have strated treatment and it has gone on almost one year since I have started treatment. But now my insurance is asking for my health records from my HIV doctor. I believe they are going to try to use the Pre-existing condition clause on me, can I get around this, since I was diagnosed at 17?

Response from Ms. Franzoi

I don't know why they are asking for your health records. Even if your plan has a pre-existing condition exclusion, it could only apply for the first 12 months of coverage.
