Student Insurance expiring
Apr 24, 2008

I am graduating in a month and have just been advised by my dr. to start meds. I'm afraid to start because I'm not sure how I will pay for the refills following the initial fill. And I don't want to be caught missing doses. I'm applying for jobs now but need advice for how to be insured given the whole "pre-existing" clause issue. What would you suggest?

Response from Ms. Franzoi

Are you losing coverage under your parents' medical plan because you will no longer qualify as a full-time student? If so, you will be eligible for COBRA. This would just be a continuation of your current coverage with no pre-existing condition exclusion. If you accept a job that offers a group health plan and you enroll within the intial enrollment period, as long as you don't have a break in coverage of 63 days or more, your new health plan will have to recognize your prior years of coverage (called Creditable Coverage) towards any pre-existing exclusion period. And the exclusion period cannot be greater than 12 months.
