Confused, Need Help
Feb 13, 2008

I am a 23 year old male who just graduated college and am about to start my career. I was diagnosed when I was a freshman in college and for the last four years my health care has been covered by the state indigent care program. But now I will be working and making too much money to qualifiy for the indigent care. my job offers health insurance but I know it won't cover pre existing conditions. what do I do? I won't make enough money to pay for my health care out of pocket and too much to get state help, I am distressed and confused please help.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

Even if the health plan offered by your employer has a pre-existing condition clause, as long as you enroll during the initial eligiblity period, the plan cannot apply a pre-existing condition period for more than a year (18 months if you are a late enrollee). In addition, if you did not have a break in coverage of greater than 63 days, the plan would have to recognize your prior coverage towards that pre-existing condtion exclusion period.
