Change of COBRA Medical Provider
Jul 2, 2007

Hello. I'm a middle-aged male living in California. My employment recently terminated with a large company and my medical coverage has been continued through COBRA for 2 months. Today I received a notification from my former employer of mandatory open enrollment for a new medical carrier to which they are changing in 60 days. The good news is that the monthly premium will cost me significantly less. However, I'm in a panic wondering if I can be denied benefits by the new carrier.

I understand that COBRA coverage remains effective for at least 18 months without a gap in paid premiums, but, is there a threat to my my acceptance from the new carrier? I've had no problems, and been very happy with the original provider since learning of my positive status in 2003...and my medicines are working wonderfully. I never imagined this scenario of a new carrier in the midst of COBRA and am worried about a crisis with my coverage. Should I be concerned?

Thank you. I appreciate your time.

You do not have to be concerned. Even though the company is changing carriers, you are still eligible for the coverage during the remainder of your COBRA period (provided you reside in an area in which the carrier provides coverage).
