Disability if hardly worked?
Jan 7, 2005

I am a 40 year old woman, recently diagnosed with several cancers. Living with my husband as only a housewife all my life I have not worked except during the last year after he left me with nothing at all. I am afraid the pain I have will eventually prevent me from working and if so, how will I house or provide for myself? If I cannot get SSI unless I have worked many years, are there any means to help me and those like me?

Response from Ms. Franzoi

Are you in a state that has state short term disability benefits - New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, California or Hawaii? If so, you would have state disability for a period of 26 to 52 weeks depending on the state. Do you have long term disability benefits through your job? If so, this would provide you with income during your disability. Other than that, I am unaware of what is available. Maybe your physician can advise you regarding what social programs are available in your area to help you.
