Medicare Part D
Mar 10, 2006

I am on Social Security Disability receiving my health care and medication from the Veterans Administration. I know the VA bills Medicare for my visits but because of my income the co-payments on my drugs have been waived. I have looked over the book that Medicare sent on the Part D and if I am interpreting it correctly I dont need Part D because of the VA. However they did send me a form which I filled out and they said that I was eligible for assistance with the Part D premium plus I may be eligible for food stamps and other programs.

My question is am I going to be forced to have Part D taken from my Social Security? If so, how do I know what plan would be best for me considering that I dont pay anything for my drugs? I only ask because even with the assistance any deduction for Part D negates the waiver I received from the VA.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

You probably don't need Medicare Part D if the VA is covering your prescription drug costs. In an analysis I did for a friend, his costs through the VA were lower than his costs would've been with a Medicare Part D policy. Therefore, he did not enroll in Medicare Part D. However, this could be different for you depending on what medications you take. I suggest that you discuss this with a counselor at the VA.
