Received letter from Ingenix Subrogation
Apr 2, 2009

Greetings! Today, I received a mail communication from Ingenix Subrogation Services requesting me to tell them about the treatment that I had last 11/7/2008 as requested by UHC to them.

I researched on the internet what is Ingenix and per my understanding they are like a data mining company hired by either health insurance company/employer to request any member to tell them if they recieved treatment due to injury or treatment.

The clause in the letter said, "Were you injured in an accident? If Yes, did someone else cause the accident? that person may be responsible for the cost etc etc... We try to recover the costs of the medical care from that person and pay back your medical plan."

Not sure if I should respond to this. I certainly know that I have not been on accident. My HIV condition and HIV treatment is not accident related but am afraid my healthplan now somehow had audited that they maybe paying a lot to cover for my medical expenses for the last 6 months already.

Questions - 1) There was a questionnaire attached to the mail, all of which are questions about the accident. Reading this, it doesn't sound that they might find out my real condition. But I want to ensure should I even respond to this, or simply answer "No, my treatment was not accident related."? if I do this, will they still ask me?

2) I understand the health care plan provider has a right to request information about my health record, treatment, at what extent they should be doing this?

Thank you for taking time to respond to my query.

This is a standard questionnaire that is sent when there is a possibility that the illness or injury was due to an accident. I am not sure what triggered this in your case. However, you should respond.
