LTD, new life, new job and insurance
May 20, 2008

Hi Lynn,

I know this question has been answered many times in different variations, but I want to make sure for my circumstances I have it right. I have been on LTD for 14 years. Several years ago I finally felt healthy and strong enough to venture back to life full-time. I decided to go back to school to create a new skill set for myself. I am graduating from a Master's Program next week and am looking for a full-time job with benefits. I currently have Medicare, Mutual of Omaha as a wrap-around policy that I pay out of pocket each month and ADAP for my drugs. Does this sound like I'm safe if my new company has a pre-exisiting clause in their health insurance coverage?

Thank you so much for your help.

Response from Ms. Franzoi

Yes. If your new company's health plan has a pre-existing condition clause in it, it cannot be for more than 12 months and the plan would have to receognize your prior periods of coverage under Medicare towards that 12 months (unless you have a break in coverage of 63 days or more).
