Buying Meds in Canada
Oct 11, 2001

What are the legal implications of buying HIV meds in Canada where they are much less expensive?

Response from Ms. Donnelly

The legal implications depend on exactly what you are planning to do. Of course, people do go to Canada to purchase their drugs at cheaper prices. I'm sure you've read the stories about busloads of senior citizens crossing the border to purchase prescription drugs.

Under the Personal Importation Act, you are allowed to bring medications for personal use into the US. However, we tried to get information from the Food and Drug Administration regarding whether there is a restriction on the amount allowed for personal use and what sort of documents you need in order to legally bring prescription drugs into the US and were unsuccessful at getting information. So although for personal use it is legal, it would be wise to get some advice on exactly how to go about it. If you cannot locate anyone who is familiar with the regulations in your area, call the Project Inform hotline at 800-822-7422 and the Access Coordinator will assist you with your research.
