Are certain professionals required to have HIV tests?
Jul 7, 2001

A guy I was dating (a semi-pro basketball player for the International Basketball Association)said that HIV testing was standard in the physical for eligibility. Is this true? I believed him and after a 6 month, supposedly monogomous relationship, had unprotected sex. I'm scared he lied....

Response from Ms. Breuer

As far as I know, in the brouhaha that resulted when Magic Johnson made his famous disclosure in 1991, the US professional basketball association obtained HIV education and determined that HIV infection was not an adequate reason to bar someone from professional basketball. To my knowledge, surgeons are required to disclose HIV infection to the boards of hospitals where they have privileges (please note the difference between that and being required by the employer to have an HIV test)and some HIV-related medications prevent professional airline pilots from flying, but I am unaware of any restrictions in sports with the exception of boxing. I recommend calling the Association and putting this question to them directly.
