FAA/DOT Medical clearance
Aug 28, 2006
In regards to FAA regulations and HIV. Due to the many side effects that are caused from medications it is very hard to get medical clearance. For instance some meds cause depression or anxiety. You would have to prove that for at least six months you have not had any instances of either and if you have what treatment was given and medications used if any. Keep in mind that while many contracts give "FMLA like benefits" you are not protected under the act as commercial pilots are limited to 1000 flight hours a year. You must have 1250 to qualify for FMLA. EEOC may investigate any claims you have but keep in mind 75% of all claims are denied and if you do get a cause finding you are limited to 300,000 in damages. That is about 5-7 yrs salary only not factoring in benefits. While I encourage everyone to pursue dreams HIV/AIDS is still easy discrimination territory for airlines with no consequences.

Response from Ms. Breuer

This is really helpful, if discouraging. Thank you so much for writing.
