Med school disclosue?
Oct 26, 2005
I know questions re: disclosure for med students have been answered but I want to write my essays about my HIV status as it encouraged me to be a physician. Is this not smart? Also, can I perform invasive procedures while HIV+ as I want to be a OB/GYN. Is this ethical?
Response from Ms. Breuer
What an interesting question! Is it possible for you to write the essay a bit more broadly: that a struggle with your own medical condition encouraged you to enter the field? There is no reason to disclose your status in the application. Once you have, you never can retrieve it.
For the question about invasive procedures, I encourage you to read the latest commentary addressing this at www.anacnet.org. The Association of Nurses in AIDS Care addresses this kind of issue frequently, and may offer links to more specific resources. Invasive procedures can be a problem if they are blind invasive procedures.
