Estrogen&Progestin Dec 23, 2001 If women use estrogen cream can it help to protect them against HIV? As well read article stating women taking birth control containing progestin are 2-3 more likely to develope HIV, has this been proven in studies? |

 There are no clinical trials to support that estrogen cream is protective against HIV and I do not know of any evidence that taking progestin increases your chance of getting HIV. It is true that women taking birth control pills (or wear patch or get injections) may be less likely to use a condom so therefore are at more risk of acquiring HIV. There are some studies currently in progress looking at the effects of hormones such as the amount of HIV in the blood and cervical secretions in women who are already infected with HIV. Expect more about these topics soon. |
