| What is IVF? Jul 30, 2000 What is IVF? I am HIV- however my husband is HIV+ and we want to have a baby. His viral loads are currently undetectable while taking his current medication. Am I less likely to contract AIDS if we try to have a baby since his viral loads are so low? Could I pass it on to the fetus even if I don't contract AIDS? Is there an alternative? |

Response from Dr. Jackson
IVF stands for in vitro fertilization, a procedure in which an egg is harvested from the woman and then exposed to the man's semen in the laboratory under sterile conditions. If the egg is fertilized, it is then implanted in the woman where she will carry the fetus until delivery. If a person's viral load is undetectable, the risk of transmitting HIV is significantly reduced, but the risk is not necessarily zero. It is very unlikely that if you did not become infected that the fetus will become infected, but no one can be certain about that. Brooks Jackson, M.D. |
