Birth Control Pills Aug 13, 2000 Is there any special consideration when adding Birth Control Pills to a regimen of Combivir and Sustiva? What about Oxandrin? Maybe a discussion of "The Pill" and all HIV-related meds (Haart, PI Sparing Regimens, prophylaxis, etc) would be helpful. |

 Sustiva is an inducer of liver enzymes which may result in the faster metabolism of birth control pills. Therefore, using a barrier form of contraception is advised if one is also using birth control pills and Sustiva. The same is true for the drug nevirapine. Because use of Oxandrin can result in liver impairment and Sustiva is metabolized extensively by the liver, it is important to monitor liver function if both drugs are used together.
