Response from Dr. Jackson
If you are HIV+ and pregnant and do not take an antiretroviral drug like AZT, there is about a 1 in 4 chance your baby will become HIV infected. About 75-80% of the time this infection occurs around the time of delivery, but 20-25% of the time it occurs when the baby is in the womb before labor starts. If you take a drug like AZT starting early in pregnancy, you can reduce the chance of transmission to your baby to less than 5% or even 2% or less if a combbination of antiretroviral drugs are taken.
