HIV testing during pregnancy
Aug 18, 2006

Dear Dr. Luzuriaga,

I had unprotected sex with a former Intravenus drug user. I cannot contact her to find out if she has been tested. She has a child, would she definitely have been tested during pregnancy?

Response from Dr. Luzuriaga

While universal testing of all pregnant women is recommended, practices vary and unfortunately, not all women receive testing during pregnancy. If you can not confirm that she was tested and was negative, you should seek HIV testing for yourself.
