Response from Dr. Sullivan
The risk of transmitting HIV from mother to baby is related to the viral load. For example, if your viral load is greater than 100,000 copies/ml your risk of transmitting HIV to your baby is greater than 50%; if your viral load is undetectable your risk of transmitting HIV to your baby is less than 1%. It is recommended that HIV infected pregnant women receive combination therapy during pregnancy, usually beginning in the second trimester, following the pregnancy therapy can be stopped if it is not indicated based on viral load and CD 4 count.JLS. |
